History
Pozzallo: Born by the sea, guardian of history, heart of the Mediterranean. Welcome to the city where the horizon never ends.

Sentinel of Wheat and the Mediterranean
In the 14th century, the history of Pozzallo undergoes a crucial turning point. Under the rule of the powerful Chiaramonte family, Counts of Modica, the coastal area took on a fundamental strategic role for the economy of the entire island.
Pozzallo was established as a Sea Charger, one of the most important wheat ports in Sicily.
The grain of the Iblean plateaus, the blond gold of the earth, flowed here to be stowed and shipped to the great ports of the Mediterranean.
Pozzallo was no longer just a water supply point, but became the "exit door" to the riches of the hinterland.
The ancient well by the sea
Before the walls and towers, Pozzallo was an entry in the pilot book of Phoenician, Greek and Roman navigators.
The original name, Puteus-alòs, defines the primary identity of the place: a geological miracle where fresh water flowed a few steps from the sea.
The Ristoro dei Velieri
At this stage, Pozzallo is a liquid entity. It is the obligatory stop for merchants loaded with spices and silks who needed to replenish their holds before tackling the Sicilian Channel.
The Meeting of the People
The beach was not a border, but an open-air market.
Here goods and cultures were exchanged in an era when the sea was the only true highway in the known world.

The Cabrera Tower: The Guardian Giant
In 1400, Count Bernardo Cabrera decided to build a "Palacium" that was both a palace and a fortress.
For centuries, its soldiers have scanned the horizon to defend the grain warehouses from the incursions of Saracen pirates.
Today, this tower is the eternal symbol of Pozzallo, a national monument that seems to float on the sand.
Why visit it: Entering its walls means still hearing the echo of the battles and admiring a breathtaking view that dominates the entire coast.
Giorgio La Pira: A Dream Born Here
Pozzallo was the birthplace of a man who changed history: Giorgio La Pira, the "Holy Mayor" of Florence.
Here, among the alleys and the scent of salt, his vision of peace and dialogue between peoples was born.
His legacy still lives on in the city squares and in the welcoming values that Pozzallo reserves for every traveler.
A suggestion: Search for the places of your childhood to discover the deepest and most spiritual soul of our community.

The Gold of the Carobs and the Blue Flag
In the nineteenth century, Pozzallo became the commercial heart of south-eastern Sicily.
Ships loaded with carobs, wheat and oil departed from its ports and headed all over the world.
Today that commercial energy has become tourist hospitality: we are the only municipality in the province bathed by the sea, proud of our beaches awarded the Blue Flag every year.
