Native Home of Giorgio La Pira
The “Giorgio La Pira” palace is the current seat of the Municipality, in the Free Municipal Consortium of Ragusa.
The palace was designed by Giovanni Raimondi on behalf of the mayor Corrado Tedeschi. The construction of the palace began in 1923 and ended in 1926. In 1928 it was officially used as the seat of the Municipality, by will of the Marquis Corrado Tedeschi, owner of the property. In 1979 it was named after Giorgio La Pira, academic, founding father, mayor of Florence and several times deputy.
The palace, one of the most splendid examples of “liberty” architecture, faces Piazza Municipio, along Corso Vittorio Veneto, and the Villa Comunale, overlooking the sea, on the back. Inside the palace there are frescoes by the painter Giuseppe Assenza from Pozzallo. From Raimondi’s original project it retains the characteristic “U” shape, with two lateral bodies.
The artistic decorations of the city palace "Giorgio La Pira" and those of the council chamber are by the illustrious painter Martino Sansone. Inside the palace, there are also many paintings by illustrious painters donated to the various mayors who followed one another.
The clock that was placed on the terrace is also a centenary, and is still working today.
